Excel translator

Translate the text in an .xlsx workbook and get it back with every formula, number and format untouched.

  • Translated: text cells on all sheets, rich text, text boxes
  • Left alone: numbers, dates, formulas, charts, sheet names
  • Private: rebuilt in your browser, nothing stored

Drop a Word, PowerPoint or Excel file

Up to 30,000 characters of text. You get the same file back, translated.

Why each label is translated only once

Excel does not store the word "Total" in every cell that shows it. It keeps one list of shared strings and each cell points to an entry. PointTranslate translates that list, so a label repeated across 2,000 rows is translated once, consistently, and every cell that uses it updates together.

Because cells hold a pointer rather than text, formulas such as =SUMIF(A:A,"Total",B:B) keep pointing at the right cells. One thing to check: a formula that compares against a typed-in word will still look for the original word, so update those strings by hand if your workbook has them.

Good uses

  • Product catalogues and price lists for a new market
  • Survey results with free-text answers in several languages
  • Supplier quotes and packing lists you received in another language
  • Bilingual glossaries: translate a copy, then paste the column beside the original

Working with a report or slides instead? The Word & PowerPoint translator uses the same in-place method.

Machine translation. Good for getting the gist of signs, menus and everyday documents. Not suitable for legal, medical, immigration or other official use; use a certified human translator for those.

Excel translator questions

How do I translate an Excel file?

Drop the .xlsx file above, pick the language, press Translate and download the translated workbook. Text cells on every sheet are translated; numbers, dates and formulas are left exactly as they were.

Will my formulas break?

No. Only text strings are translated. Formulas, cell references, number formats, column widths, colours, charts and sheet names are not touched, so totals still add up.

Are sheet names and charts translated?

Cell text, rich-text cells and text in shapes and text boxes are translated. Sheet tab names, chart titles and comments are left in the original language so that formulas and links that refer to them keep working.

Is there a size limit?

Up to about 30,000 characters of text per file (repeated text in many cells counts once), and 25 MB. Split very large workbooks by sheet.

What about .xls or Google Sheets?

Old .xls files need to be re-saved as .xlsx first. In Google Sheets choose File → Download → Microsoft Excel (.xlsx).

Is the spreadsheet uploaded?

No. The workbook is opened and rebuilt in your browser; only the text strings are sent for translation, and nothing is stored.
